"What Do You Want Me to Do for You?" (Mark 10:46-52)

"What Do You Want Me to Do for You?" (Mark 10:46-52)

As I sit at my desk writing this week’s devotion, I’m looking at our friend Martin Luther (a PlayMobil version of old Marty that I received from one of you last year, on the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation). There Marty stands with writing instrument in one hand and the Bible he translated into the vernacular of his countrymen in the other. It would be easy to get things mixed up and assume that LUTHER was the hero of the Reformation movement. The truth is, it was the Holy Spirit, working through the life-giving Word of God, that’s the real hero of the story. The Word of God delivered and lived through the Son of God, Jesus Christ, continues to raise up, bestow the gift of faith—hearts that see Jesus—-to people 500 years later.

When a Brave Face Isn't Enough (Mark 4:21-43)

When a Brave Face Isn't Enough (Mark 4:21-43)

This week has been Vacation Bible School week at Trinity. Sacred Rest (Gen 2:1-3; Deut 5:12-15; Mark 2:23-3:6)

It is so much easier to give in to the schedule book, the demands of others, the need to be appreciated, the expectation that we will perform better than before. Sometimes there are real needs to be met RIGHT NOW. But this is not where Life is found. This week, we not only hear the refrain of sacred rest in the Scriptures....we rely on the gift of the Spirit to more perfectly sing it ourselves.

In the Hands of the Healer (Acts 3:11-21)

The truly Good News is that no matter what diagnosis our earthly doctors give us right here and now, no matter what measure of physical or emotional pain we might be dealing with today...the prognosis for all who place themselves in the hands of the Great Physician is sure. In Jesus, our sins are forgiven.

Healed for "Running" the Race (1 Cor. 9:24; Mk 1:29-31)

Healed for "Running" the Race (1 Cor. 9:24; Mk 1:29-31)

St. Paul invokes the language of athletic competition in his letter to the church at Corinth. With the Superbowl on Sunday and the Winter Olympics starting up in PyeongChang, Korea next week, it’s a timely image. “Do you not know,” St. Paul encourages the church at Corinth, “that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you might win it.”
